Let’s eradicate HTLV-1 together!
How can we do this?

Time to eradicate HTLV-1: an open letter to WHO, by Global Virus Network (GVN) Scientists & Activists

HTLV clinics: assessment, treatment & follow up care
  • HTLV positive individuals need follow up care
  • Assessed for HTLV-1 associated diseases (examination & blood tests)
  • Treatment where needed
  • Support for the individuals & families

Ongoing expansion of HTLV-1 testing
  • Sexual health clinics: to support HTLV carriers & promote safe sex
  • Antenatal testing to help HTLV positive mothers & to advise mothers against breastfeeding
  • Organ donors: to exclude HTLV-1 positive donations
  • People who inject drugs:  to support HTLV carriers,  promote safe sex & safe injecting

Swift turnaround of HTLV testing & results (serology & viral load)
  • Faster time to disease assessment & identification
  • Treatment provided as early as possible, if required

HTLV Education: Increase awareness & knowledge
  • Access to up-to-date & evidence-based WHO HTLV-1 Fact Sheet & web-page will allow health care providers to diagnose HTLV-1 & its diseases more often and in a timely fashion
  • Wider access to HTLV information & resources for patients, families & the wider population

We felt that too many patients with HTLV and their relatives, too many clinicians and scientists did not know what HTLV was. We felt that everybody has the right to quick, accurate and easily accessible information online, but especially people who are suffering with HTLV and those who care for them.
